On January 10, 2016, the Meeting approved the sending of this letter to the local Muslim community:
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is known as one of the three peace churches in Protestantism today. Members of the Fort Myers Friends Meeting, our local meeting, wish to reach out to you and your community to say how concerned we are about negative actions of fear and hate that may be directed toward you and your faith community.
We are appalled by both verbal and physical attacks that peaceful Muslims suffer and endure in the United States and abroad. We understand the provocations that created great anxiety in this country, of course. However, threatening to close our borders to people fleeing from war-torn countries is a contradiction in a nation that sees itself as place of safety and justice. We are shocked that today even present and potential leaders of this nation feel free to speak threatening, mean-spirited and self-serving comments at will, publicly. It is a dark time, indeed.
Yet, we know that only love in people’s hearts will bring light into the darkness. To that end, we offer prayers. We continue to teach peace. We work for justice in our local community and faithfully support such efforts world-wide, primarily but not exclusively, through Friends’ peace and social justice organizations. We support anti-gun legislation. One of the core and universal beliefs among Friends is that religious freedom and justice are basic human rights for all people.
Thus, we wanted to reach out to you and your faith community to offer friendship and support. Perhaps you might suggest to us or guide us in some way that we could be useful to you during these troubling times.
